Don’t miss your chance to win a prestigious award at this year’s UK IT Industry Awards 2010.

The closing date for entering is 5pm on 16 July.

The winners will be announced at a lavish prize-giving ceremony, to be held at the Battersea Park Arena in London on Thursday 11 November 2010.

To encourage you to compile your entry for one of our prestigious awards, over the next few weeks were profiling some of last years winners in print and online.

For full run-down of this years award categories and details on how to enter, go to www. computing. co. uk/awards.

Best small IT supplier of the year was won last year by Telnic, which administers the. tel top-level domain used to publish contact information for businesses and individuals, rather than conventional web content.

A typical. tel page is a list of phone numbers, email addresses and links, perfect for those who dont need a full-blown web site to provide their contact details or want to supplement their web site with a quick directory reference which can be accessed from mobiles, dialled directly from softphones and even accessed offline.

When Telnic submitted its entry, the business was just a few months old, having been launched in March 2009. The other entrants in the category were mostly conventional system or service providers, so was Justin Hayward, Telnic communications and business development director, running the risk that the judges wouldnt get Telnics proposition?

“Very much so, but what we do is readily understood by small and micro businesses and individual professionals. Its used by everyone from taxi drivers to doctors,” he says.

The award certainly helped raise awareness of the. tel service. ICANNs biggest domain wholesaler, eNom, started offering. tel addresses in December 2009, and at CeBit in March this year, Telnic picked up a European Seal of e-Excellence award.

“As a small UK business, winning the combined Computing and BCS Award meant a great deal to us,” says Hayward.

So Telnic is still little more than a year old but has amassed more than 280,000 subscribers. In June this year it was rolled out in 16 languages to international domain names IDN. tel. Next up is integration with open authentication provider OpenID.

To organisations mulling over entering this years awards, Hayward says “Take a good look at what you do and pick a category carefully, not necessarily an obvious one. And really believe that what you have is a winner.”

Best technology supplier of the year

Best technology supplier of the year 2009 was won by EMIS for its eponymous web-based healthcare system which enables different healthcare professionals to view and contribute to a patient’s core medical record, improving patient care and reducing waiting times and costs.

For example, Liverpool primary care trust reduced the cost of one service by a factor of 10 and one patient said of the system, “this changed my life.”

The company entered the awards partly “to thank everyone in the company for their hard work in making it happen,” says Sean Riddell, chief executive of EMIS Group. “It has taken five years to develop the system.”

Since winning the award, EMIS has floated successfully on the Alternative Investment Market in March 2010, drumming up a market capitalisation of £175m with a share placing that was twice over-subscribed.

Emis Web has also had a good year.

“More users are coming on board,” says Riddell. “For GPs, the accreditation of the system that is required by NHS Connecting for Health has begun and we hope that by autumn 2010 we will be in a position to roll out the product nationally.”

Riddell says anyone considering entering this year shouldnt shy away from seeking recognition for their hard work.

“Awards such as this are also a great way to recognise the contribution of your whole team,” he says.

Mozilla Firefox gaining set in corporate IT environments.?

Technology giant IBM wants its workers about the world to use free, open-source Mozilla Firefox as their window into the internet.

“Any employee who is not it being so that using Firefox will be strongly encouraged to use it as their default browser,” IBM executive Bob Sutor said Thursday in a blog post.

“While other browsers wish come and gone, Firefox is now the gold standard for which an open, secure, and standards-compliant browser should be.”

Making Firefox the default browser appliance that workers computers will automatically use that software to access the Internet if not commanded to do differently.

All new computers for IBM employees be pleased have Firefox installed and the global company “will continue to vehemently encourage our vendors who have browser-based software to fully nutriment Firefox,” according to Sutor.

New York State-based IBM, known the agency of the nickname “Big Blue,” has a corporate history dating back a hundred years and now reportedly has nearly 400,000 workers.

“Today we even now have thousands of employees using it on Linux, Mac, and Windows laptops and desktops, unless we? re going to be adding thousands more users to the rolls,” Sutor related.

Sutor is the vice president of open source and Linux at IBM, what one. launched an Open Source Initiative in 1998. Open-source software is essentially treated similar to public property, with improvements made by any shared with all.

Firefox is the advance most popular web browser in an increasingly competitive market dominated by Microsofts Internet Explorer.

Google Chrome has been steadily gaining market share, last week replacing Apple Safari as the third most current web browser in the United States.

“Well continue to examine this or that browser be faster or introduce new features, on the other hand then another will come along and be better still, including Firefox,” Sutor reported.

“I think it was Firefox and its growth that reinvigorated the browser market as well as the web. That is, Firefox forced competitors to rejoin.”

For Baptist preacher and divine Russell Moore, the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is else than an environmental disaster, a corporate fiasco or a political failure.

Stress and obscurity have caused nearly 3,000 in Louisiana to seek counseling.

More Photos

To Moore, it is a meander point that could shape how evangelical Christians view the environment. He says is could prevail upon people as powerfully as Roe vs. Wade shaped how they scan abortion.

Before the Roe vs. Wade decision, most evangelicals assumed that bioethical questions werent theirs to argue, he said, but after the ruling, the issue “pierced through” their consciences.

“I hold the same is the case when we see this horrific ecological upshot. We simply cant be at the place were some evangelicals were precursory to this of simply dismissing the whole idea of environmental bulwark as Al Gores cause and the cause of hippies attached their food co-op,” he said.

In a blog post earlier this month, Moore, who is the dean of the School of Theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, wrote a suit to his community, calling for a reassessment of evangelicals “uneasy ecological moral faculty.

“

Preacher Evangelicals Should Apply Skepticism of Government to Corporations, Individuals

“Weve had each inadequate view of human sin,” he wrote. “Because we believe in at liberty markets, weve acted as though this means we should sell to on credit corporations to protect the natural resources and habitats. But a laissez-faire look on of government regulation of corporations is akin to the youth parson who lets the teenage girl and boy sleep in the same sleeping bag at church camp because he believes in young people.”

He reported that caring for God means caring for Gods creation. And to bestow that, Christians need to hold the government, corporations and individuals responsible.

“Evangelicals, at least conservative evangelicals, tend to have a healthy skepticism of government,” he said. “But often we havent applied that identical skepticism to corporations or technology our own consumption of resources. Im trade for a distribution of our skepticism to ourselves and to every aspect of our lives.

At the Southern Baptist Conventions yearly report meeting this month, he helped write a resolution expressing a similar sentiment.

Googles motto might be “do no evil” but this weeks decision to discontinue its policy of redirecting Web traffic in mainland China to its Hong Kong site to bypass the countrys penchant for censoring content smacks more of a different motto “Show us the money.”

As Datamation reports, Googles commercial license is up for renewal Wednesday and without it, Google would go dark in the worlds most populous and economically intriguing nation. So Googles backed off from the hard-line stance it took earlier this year following a number of high-profile hacking incidents originating in China targeted it and other prominent U. S. companies.

Now, Google is phasing out the automatic redirect, which came under sharp criticism from Chinese officials at the time it was implemented and ultimately proved untenable for Google to continue operating with an Internet Content Provider license on the mainland, the company said.

Instead, Google has set up a landing page on Google. cn that links to the Hong Kong site, offering Chinese users the full complement of Googles online services while offering unfiltered, local content.

At risk of losing its commercial license to operate in China, Google is taking a step back from its tough stance against online censorship in that country.

The search giant announced late Monday that it will no longer automatically redirect Web users in mainland China to the Hong Kong version of its site where it operates beyond the scope of Chinese censorship laws.

“This redirect, which offers unfiltered search in simplified Chinese, has been working well for our users and for Google,” David Drummond, Googles NASDAQ GOOG chief legal officer, wrote in a blog post. “However, its clear from conversations we have had with Chinese government officials that they find the redirect unacceptable and that if we continue redirecting users our Internet Content Provider license will not be renewed.”

The 13 photovoltaic PV might-generating stations will come up in the northwestern region and Inner Mongolia.

The National Energy Administration has before-mentioned it has called for tender of open bids for the installations. Bidding is expected to take set on August 10 this year, with results expected to be announced means of that month itself.

According to a DigiTimes report, the photovoltaic systems could be made of silicon-based or thin-film modules.

Bemrose Booth, a specialist printing company based in England, has gone into administration.

The company was the largest supplier of car parking tickets in the UK, with high-profile customers such as NCP. It also manufactured rail tickets and revealed plans to invest in new technologies such as RFID and SMART to increase its expertise in the ticketing arena.

It has suffered from the over-capacity prevailing in the printing market, much like other large companies in this field, according to insolvency practitioner David Rubin and Partners LLP in London. Two of the firm’s partners have been appointed joint administrators for Bemrose Booth.

The company’s woes have been fuelled by declining profitability in fields such as scratchcards for the telecoms industry, where markets and production have moved to developing nations as production costs are much lower.

Its calendar business, based in Derby, has also been hit by declining margins in the promotional products and secure mail businesses. Production issues with the business led to those parts of the company being closed last week, resulting in 160 redundancies.

A further 26 redundancies in Hull followed the decision to stop producing telecom scratchcards in Hull, according to David Rubin and Partners LLP.

“The emphasis now is on saving those viable parts of the business and preserving the jobs of the remaining workforce,” said David Rubin, joint administrator.

“We are dealing with a high-quality and profitable operation and are confident that a sale can be achieved. Everybody concerned has a part to play in achieving that.

The company operated two sites in Derby, one in Hull and another in Teesside. It employed about 650 staff two years ago but reduced its headcount to 350 in the past 12 months.

The remaining divisions in Hull, where 125 people are employed, and the operation in Teesside, which employs 34 people, are trading normally while bu yers are sought for the business as a going concern. A significant level of interest has been expressed in the business and talks with a number of interested parties are ongoing.
